Race and Punishment in Education

Mica Pollack is a leading scholar of race-based discrimination in schools. Her book, Everyday Anti-racism is required reading in many teacher education programs. I have found her work, and especially this book to be very helpful in explaining the basics of racism in America, especially in schooling.  She states that this article is important now, in light of police overreactions in the arrest and possible death of Sandra Bland.  This targeting and pain must stop.

Action: Talk to school board members , teachers, and city council members about discipline and punishment. What are the statistics? What are the consequences of overreaction for youth, their families, and the community overall?

Action: Talk to young people. How do they perceive adult reactions to their behavior? Do they see inequitable treatment?
